Hexlid™ is a new era in head protection, it is a proprietary EVA injection moulded helmet. Hexlid™ is designed for all forms of body contact sport.
In March 2016 independent scientific testing was completed by Dr. Andrew McIntosh (Consultant Biomechanist) using state-of-the art head impact testing and evaluation methods. Selected development models of Hexlid™ plus a wide range of commercially available compression moulded head guards were tested. This rigorous testing culminated in a document reporting all the comparative data recorded.
The report concludes; “Analyses predict an approximate halving in the likelihood of concussion for football players who might wear the HexlidRed model compared to those wearing current commercial headgear models.” The figure below demonstrates the benefits of wearing a Hexlid™ over alternative forms of head protection.
On September 6th, 2016 the AFL approved Hexlid™ for use in Australian Rules Football. In 2019 Hexlid™ will be manufactured and sold under licence by Madison Sport Pty. Ltd. Madison Sport believes that the Hexlid™ will meet and exceed the proposed AFL Advanced Headgear Standard (AFLAHS2018).
Advances in technology both relating to injection moulding techniques and in EVA foam compounding make the creation of Hexlid™ possible. Whilst a Hexlid™ is firm, it is not hard. The soft shell form means that it will protect both players involved in a collision, with the wearers likelihood of concussion reduced by up to 55%. A Hexlid™ weighs approximately 170-230 grams, depending on size. Initially it will be available in two colours (black and white).
